While heading back from the water-hole, Bhunte almost crushed Mr. Caterpillar. Unlike his strong ability to smell, Bhunte has a very poor eyesight. His vision is peripheral, where he can see the side views (not at the back and cannot see in front of his trunk) and lacks depth perception. All of his herd members rely on their smelling abilities rather than their visions. They can see clearly up to 10 meters and have blurred vision up to 25-30 meters. Well, Bhunte and other elephants are dichromic- and it is said that they cannot perceive green and red colors. But, humans are still unsure about what they see and how they perceive. Interestingly, Bhunte and his relatives have ‘arrhythmic’ vision-well that means, their vision changes with the time of day. They can see anything when exposed to small amount of light and they can also see during the night. Bhunte is very happy, anyway, as his poor eyesight has been compensated with his excellent ability to smell and hear.
